Fundraising events held for family of slain referee

SALT LAKE CITY – Soccer referee Ricardo Portillo died after a 17-year-old player allegedly assaulted him at a match, and now the league he refereed in is hosting a tournament to raise funds for his family.

Liga Continental De Futbol is hosting the tournament Saturday and Sunday, and 100 percent of the funds raised will go to Portillo’s family.

Jose Alcaraz is a friend of Portillo, and he said the tournament is a way for people to be there for the Portillo family in a difficult time.

“I know nothing we do is going to bring him back, but it’s something that will just show our support,” he said. “We just wanted to help as much as we can, and help that cause, and support the family—show them that we are together in this with them.”

Sandy woman finds thousands of bees in backyard

SANDY, Utah – A Sandy woman took her children out to play, and she discovered a basketball-sized swarm of bees waiting for them.

Heather Salomon found thousands of honey bees swarming underneath the trampoline in her backyard. She called in beekeeper Spencer Mortensen, who removed the hive.

She said the experience was frightening.

“I was scared,” she said. “You know, anytime you see bees or that many bees together in one spot you’re a little nervous!”

Mortensen said bees tend to swarm during this time of the year, as they are harvesting food. He also said the bees aren’t as aggressive at this time because their bellies are full. He also said he was glad to take the bees off of Salomon’s hands.

“Someone around here maybe has bees, and they just lost half their hive, and I want to thank them for letting me pick it up,” he said.

Students reenact Civil War battle

SANDY, Utah – Students at Crescent Middle School got a hands-on lesson on the Civil War on Friday.

The students have been studying the Battle of Bull Run this week, but instead of just reading about it, they got to reenact history.

“Recreating the Battle of Bull Run, which is one of the battles of the Civil War, that we’ve studied in class this past week. There’s a signal that is given off so soldiers know they’re to meet and there’s a battle is about to happen,” said history teacher Jordan Smith.

Actors from the Utah Civil War Association from Fort Douglas were there to help with the reenactment, and students say the experience is a great way to learn.

“When you’re out doing things hands on it’s, like, it’s easy to remember things cause you’ve done it before and you’ve been where it happened,” said student Austin Lambert.

Intermountain Healthcare names healthiest principal in Salt Lake Valley

SALT LAKE CITY – Intermountain Healthcare challenged 13 elementary school principals to a 100-day challenge to see who is the healthiest in the Salt Lake Valley, and the winners of the challenge were announced on Wednesday.

As part of the My Heart Challenge, the principals had to change their habits by exercising more and eating better, and they pushed their students to do the same.

“Before the challenge, my biggest health concern was my weight. I was overweight, out of shape and super busy. I had plenty of excuses for why I shouldn’t exercise or eat healthy,” said Becky Gerber, principal at Herriman Elementary School.

Overall, the 13 principals lost a total 228 pounds in 100 days, or an average of just over 17.5 pounds each.

Gerber was the overall winner and Mark Longe, principal at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Salt Lake City, took home the prize for Most Improved.
