FrontRunner South line opens, but some wait times doubled

SALT LAKE CITY – The new FrontRunner South line connecting Salt Lake City and Provo opened on Monday, meaning riders can now make the nearly 90-mile trip from Ogden to Provo without having to transfer.

The FrontRunner South line takes about an hour each way, which is a big boost to Utah County commuters, but that means the wait time for others in Davis and Weber Counties doubles, going from 30 minutes to an hour.

Overall, UTA officials say most riders won’t see a difference in wait times, but for some people traveling against the flow – going from Salt Lake City to Ogden during morning rush hour – or at off-peak times, the wait time doubles. T

rains will still depart every 30 minutes and there will be the same number of trains on the rails, but UTA is working to allocate resources in the best way possible.

Commuters get first trip on FrontRunner South line

PROVO, Utah – Commuters got their first chance to try out the new FrontRunner South line that travels from Salt Lake City to Provo.

The FrontRunner South line has seven stops: downtown Salt Lake City, near Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, near the South Towne Center in South Jordan, Draper, Lehi, American Fork, within walking distance to Utah Valley University in Orem and Provo.

Passengers got free rides on Saturday, and trains were packed with commuters as they got a chance to experience the 80 trains making the one-way hour-long trip.

“We had a hard time finding a seat for our whole family together,” said Spanish Fork resident Shirlene Jenkins.

With the new line, commuters can now travel from Weber County to Provo, stopping at major points along the way and making transfers to bus or TRAX lines fast and easy. UTA estimates that around 7,000 people will take advantage of the new line every day.

Salt Lake County recruiting for members of Bicycle Advisory Committee

The Salt Lake County Bicycle Advisory Committee (SLCBAC) is seeking applicants to serve on the committee. The application deadline is Monday, December 3, 2012. There are three spots open on the nine-member committee.

Integrating bicycles into an automobile-centric transportation system is definitely a challenge. Over the past few years significant progress has been made in Salt Lake County improving multi-modal transportation opportunities including pedestrian and bikes. Much of this progress is thanks to the collaboration between the County’s Bicycle Advisory Committee and the county’s Department of Public Works.

The progress includes expand number of bike lanes, resurfacing traditional bike routes and new bicycle signage in the unincorporated county.

UTA proposing bus route changes in Salt Lake, Utah Counties

SALT LAKE CITY – With FrontRunner service from Salt Lake City to Provo being added later this year, UTA is considering changes to bus routes in the two counties.

With the FrontRunner extension from Salt Lake City to Provo opening this December, UTA is planning to change bus service to better accommodate the rail stations and improve local bus service.

“We’re proposing to replace the existing express bus services that travel between Salt Lake and Utah Counties with the FrontRunner commuter rail,” said Gerry Carpenter, UTA spokesperson. ”Even bus services will be improved in the end because we will be increasing the bus service in  Utah County by 17 percent.”

But some regular bus riders say the new system will add time to their trip. Rod Barney says only two buses are available in the morning and two at night, and, with the train making seven stops, he’s worried he’ll be spending more time on the bus.

Jordan River Parkway trail maps now available

SALT LAKE CITY - A map of the Jordan River Parkway trail system is now available.

A complete outlook of the trail system was designed and printed to help the National Park Service Rivers and Trails Conservation Assistance program.

An event at Oxbow Park James Madison trailhead took place on Wednesday to announce where residents can get a hard copy of the map.

"It goes from lake to lake to Utah County and to Davis County. It's a great centerfold your children can be proud to have," said Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon.

The new map highlights trailheads, public transit areas, urban parks and conservation areas.
